San Diego initially took a hands-off approach. The scooters became popular, with an average of 30,000 riders per day, according to city officials.
In July 2018, a new company, ScootScoop, formed to haul away scooters that they deemed to be parked on private property. They charge Bird, Lime and others a retrieval fee of $50 per scooter, plus $2 for each day of storage.
