The impacts that emerging technologies could have on cities and communities are far-reaching and complex. How should we be making decisions today for cities of the future?
Given the range of possible emerging technology impacts that could affect land use, urban design, building design, transportation and real estate, it is important to start thinking about these issues now. While some of these technologies are still emerging, the ones that are in use can offer lessons on navigating ongoing developments in a dynamic landscape.
The two main areas of actions are Governance and Design. Governance encompasses the regulatory actions, processes and decisions that affect how emerging technologies are managed and deployed. Design focuses on physical elements of the built environment that respond to the new conditions brought about by emerging technologies.
