How A Giant Mall Parking Lot Turned Into A Park And A Walkable Community

In Seattle, a suburban shopping center’s parking lot is being transformed into a new walkable neighborhood.

Key findings

The Seattle metropolitan area is expecting its population to grow by 1.7 million residents by 2040.

“The development, called Thornton Place, includes 387 LEED-certified apartments, senior housing, a medical center, and more retail space.”

This project aims to improve salmon life at the headwaters of Thornton Creek, the critical stream for wildlife that was cut off when the area was originally developed into a mall in the 1950s.
