FDIC National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households

FDIC National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households

This survey estimates how many U.S. households do not have a bank account or are “underbanked,” and provides insights that may help these consumers within the banking system.

Key findings

In 2017, approximately 8.4 million U.S. households (6.5 percent) did not have a checking or savings account.

“An additional 18.7 percent of U.S. households were“underbanked” in 2017, meaning that the household had an account at an insured institution but also obtained financial products or services outside of the banking system.”

More than half of households without a bank account say they do not have one because they don’t have enough money to keep in an account.
