Transportation is arguably experiencing its most transformative revolution since the introduction of the automobile in the early 1900s. Concerns over climate change and equity are converging with dramatic technological advances. Although these changes— including shared mobility and automation—are rapidly altering the mobility landscape, predictions about the future of transportation are complex, nuanced, and widely debated. Dr. Susan Shaheen was among the first to observe, research, and write about changing dynamics in shared mobility. She will review the latest research on shared mobility impacts, including effects on vehicle miles traveled, auto ownership, and greenhouse gas emissions. She will also discuss the forces driving the sharing economy and the likely scenarios through which automated vehicles will gain prominence in the future.
